The Communications Division is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Validations

Each year, the Communications Division is responsible for following up on stolen items that are entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer system. These items include stolen vehicles, stolen tags and other articles that have a unique serial number. On occasion, these items may be receoved by yourself or another agency and the Laurel Police Department does not get notified that the item(s) were found. Therefore, in accordance with NCIC policies and procedures, it is necessary each year to make contact with the reporting party and verify that the item(s) are still stolen and that the information we have in the report is correct. The validation process only takes a few minutes to complete and can usually be done over the phone. If we're not able to reach you by telephone, you may receive a letter to the last know address we have on file for you.

The information we need to verify includes:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Telephone Number
  • Incident Type
  • Incident Date
  • Incident Location
  • Item Description
  • Item Serial Number, License Plate Number or Vehicle Identification Number
  • Status of item (still stolen or found)

It is very important that we hear from you during the validation process. If we are not able to verify the report information, we may be required to suspend the case and remove the entry from NCIC.
