The Phelps Senior Citizens Center, operated by the Laurel Department of Parks and Recreation, serves senior citizens 55 years of age or older.
The center hosts a variety of social and service organizations and clubs. These organizations include the Laurel Chapter of AARP, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and the Laurel Senior Friendship Club.
Senior citizen programs and classes are scheduled at various locations in Laurel. These include the Phelps Seniors Citizens Center, the Laurel Armory, the Robert J. DiPietro Community Center, the Laurel Library, and the Laurel Mall. The programs and services provided by the department include recreational activities, educational classes, health related services and transportation services. The center is the focal point and clearing house for all related senior center services in
the greater Laurel area.
Day trips are offered to local malls and points of interest in the Washington/Baltimore and Virginia/Pennsylvania areas. The Prince George's County Food and Friendship program provides hot lunches Monday through Friday at 12:00 noon. Reservations are required. The City of Laurel Transportation Program provdies curb to curb service within the Laurel area Monday through Friday by appointment and requires a $25 annual registration fee.
